EFAs Are Here!
What the heck are EFAs you ask? Well, the short answer is that they are essential fatty acids containing Omega 3 and Omega 6. “Gee, thanks a lot…but, can you tell me what the heck these Omega thingys are? Are they from outer space or what?” Great question. Omega 3 and Omega 6 are essential to proper body functions and health. Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are fats that are essential to the diet because the body cannot produce them. EFAs are extremely important nutrients for our health. They are present in every healthy cell in the body, and are critical for the normal growth and functioning of the cells, muscles, nerves, and organs. EFAs are also used by the body to produce a class of hormone-like substances called prostaglandins, which are key to many important processes.
It has been estimated that as high as 80% of the American population may consume insufficient quantities of EFAs. This leads to deficiencies of EFAs which is linked to a variety of health problems, including major ones such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Symptoms of EFA deficiency or imbalance include dry or scaly skin, excessively dry hair, cracked fingernails, fatigue, weakness, frequent infections, allergies, mood disorders, hyperactivity, depression, memory and learning problems, slow wound healing, aching joints, poor digestion, high blood pressure, obesity, and high cholesterol. EFAs also help us lose weight, control cholesterol, maintain a median blood pressure level, help relieve constipation and nausea, as well as a host of other healthy benefits.
As a matter-of-fact, EFAs are currently used in the nutritional treatment of over 60 medical conditions ranging from heart disease, high blood pressure, arthritis, asthma, allergies, menopause, skin problems, diabetes, and digestive disorders as well as immune disorders such as MS and Lupus and even cancer. The important thing to remember about EFAs is that they do not normally occur in our bodies. We get them from soybeans, certain oils, some meats and fish and the only way our bodies can get these essential elements, is to consume them. And here’s something nice to know; side effects with most EFA supplements are rare, because EFAs are nontoxic and are used by the body as energy when taken in excess.
